Fighting for Iowa
Brian Meyer is a proud Democrat and the experienced voice Des Moines needs in the Iowa House.

Brian grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, and went to Dubuque Senior High School. He later earned degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and Drake University Law School. Early on, Brian developed a strong work ethic that's stayed with him throughout his career.
He served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1991 to 1998. Brian started as an enlisted soldier, went through Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1997 after completing the Infantry Officer Basic Course. He was named Soldier of the Year in 1997 for his unit, the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry Division.
After law school, Brian worked as an Assistant Iowa Attorney General, managing a range of legal work for the state — everything from criminal prosecutions to civil disputes. He then served as an Assistant Polk County Attorney, where he built a reputation for being fair, thorough, and direct.
Brian was on the Des Moines City Council for seven years starting in 2007. He also served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, focusing on issues like housing and neighborhood development.
Since 2013, Brian has represented southeast Des Moines in the Iowa House. In 2025, his colleagues picked him as House Minority Leader. He's known for being straightforward and for encouraging collaboration within his caucus. Brian focuses mostly on economic and government issues that affect everyday Iowans.
When he's not working, Brian stays busy as an attorney and volunteers with community groups focused on justice and youth mentorship. He's passionate about policies that help working families and people trying to get ahead.
Brian lives in Des Moines with his wife Ann and their two daughters. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time outdoors and catching a Cubs or a Wild game. People who know him say he's approachable and down-to-earth, focused on practical results more than political talk.
